Samuel held the old letter in one hand.
“Many years ago, Clara was judged for something that was never her fault,” he said. “They branded her a liar and dishonored her, even though she was just a girl who needed protection.”
A murmur rippled through the room.
Samuel continued:
The adults around her chose reputation over the truth. They chose silence instead of protecting her. And then, when the truth became impossible to hide, they blamed the girl instead of blaming the person who hurt her.
My mother lowered her head.
My father stared at the ground.
Samuel turned towards me.
Clara isn’t here because her past defines her. He’s here because he survived it.
My eyes filled with tears.
“I’m not marrying a woman with a shameful past,” he continued. “I’m marrying the strongest and kindest person I’ve ever known.”
Several guests burst into tears.
Then the doors of the chapel opened.
They all turned around.
Adrian was at the back of the room.
She looked older than I remembered. Her face was pale, and the confidence she once displayed was gone.
For a moment, I was fifteen again.
I could almost hear the whispers of the village. I felt the cold ground beneath my feet and saw Margaret in the doorway, telling me that her son had left.
Adrian slowly approached us.
“My mother passed away two weeks ago,” he said.
Nobody moved.
Before he died, he told me everything.
His voice broke.
“She admitted that she knew Clara had suffered as a child. I knew Clara hadn’t deceived me. But he convinced me that marrying her would humiliate our family.”
Adrian stared at me.
She was young, proud, and cruel. But none of that justifies what I did.
He stopped a few steps away.
I never asked you what happened. I never defended you. I abandoned you and allowed everyone to destroy your name.
My father finally raised his head.
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
“Clara, please forgive me.
For years I had imagined that moment.
He had seen me yelling at him. I thought about demanding that he confess everything in front of the whole town or begging for forgiveness for the years he had stolen.
But while I was with Samuel, I realized that Adrian no longer controlled my life.
