It turned out that Robert’s wife had suffered a strange skin-allergic condition for years. Certain fabrics, laundry detergents and even common soaps caused painful inflammations.
In the past few days, Robert had observed the same symptoms in Emily.
That’s why he washed his clothes separately already hand.
And every time he offered to bathe her, his intention was to use a special product and check if new spots had appeared on her skin.
“Why didn’t you tell me anything?” I shouted, feeling anger and relief at the same time.
Robert’s eyes filled with tears.
I made a mistake. First I wanted to be completely sure. Daniel’s mother suffered a lot from this disease. I was afraid you’d think I was exaggerating. I asked Emily not to say anything until I had an appointment with the doctor. Now I understand how terrifying my behavior should look.
That same night we took Emily to the doctor.
Our daughter was diagnosed with a mild form of the same disease. The doctor said that if we had discovered it later, it could have worsened much more.
When we left the clinic, Emily took her grandfather’s hand.
“I knew he was helping me,” he said.
I looked at Robert, too ashamed to talk. He didn’t blame me. He simply said quietly:
“You are his mother. You had every right in the world to worry. But you should have told yourself everything from the beginning.”
From that day on, there were no more secrets in our house.
