Part 2
The atmosphere in the clinic hallway was stifling. Mateo paced back and forth, his shoes wearing down on the marble floor. Doña Carmen prayed softly, her trembling fingers moving along the beads of her rosary, while Sofía sat in a corner, anxiously checking her cell phone. No one spoke, but the air was thick with unspoken resentment, old suspicions, and a searing uncertainty that threatened to sever the last ties between them.
Two hours later, the double doors to the surgical area burst open. The doctor emerged, still wearing her blue protective suit, but her face no longer reflected the tension of before; instead, there was an incomprehensible mixture of astonishment and absolute serenity. Mateo rushed toward her without a second thought, closely followed by the two women.
“How is my wife? And the baby?” Mateo asked, his heart pounding.
The doctor smiled slightly, trying to calm everyone before delivering the crucial news.
“Elena is resting, and the baby is perfectly stable in the observation incubator. He’s a strong, healthy boy. However, what we removed during the procedure requires you all to sit down immediately.”
The three companions moved toward the private consultation room. On the metal table rested a stainless steel tray covered with a sterilized cloth. The doctor approached cautiously and removed the cloth, revealing a small Victorian silver casket, perfectly sealed with red wax, completely intact and without a scratch.
“This is no ordinary object,” the specialist explained. “What we saw on the ultrasound wasn’t just a loose medallion, but this airtight capsule. Medicine has no logical explanation for how it got there without causing any prior injury, but physically it was housed in an adjacent cavity that protected the baby at all times.”
