PART 1: THE MONEY NEVER CAME TO THEM
Daniela felt the phone weigh a ton.
“I know you’re with them.”
His mother read the message over her shoulder and paled.
He found us.
Why are you afraid of Mauritius?
His father looked again at the black van.
“Because that truck is one of the people you owe money to.
Daniela stood still.
What money?
Her mother started crying.
“Yours.
Over the next few minutes, the truth came to pieces.
The first years, Mauricio did give them part of the transfers.
Then he started to stay with small quantities.
Then with half.
Finally, with everything.
When her parents asked, he claimed that Daniela had stopped sending money.
“He told us that you had formed another life in Spain,” his mother whispered. That you were tired of keeping us.
Daniela felt nauseous.
I sent money every month.
He pulled out the phone.
